It’s really important for sellers to get the right balance of information in a listing. There is such a thing as too much info, and there is certainly too little info! Most important, sellers should not assume that buyers can read their minds.

In my case, I was recently considering getting an iPod Touch for testing apps. I don’t care if it’s used. I found that many of the ones on eBay have a cracked or broken screen. But if you find a listing that uses a stock picture of a (brand new iPod Touch), and the listing says there is some “cosmetic damage,” should I assume the screen has a crack or not? That’s why you need to TELL me. Tell me with photos and words, but use BOTH so I’m sure.

Don’t do anything that might make me doubt you or the item. I did end up asking the seller, and he seemed almost insulted that I wanted to know. He acted like if the screen were cracked, he would have mentioned that. Well, I don’t know that for sure. He could have NOT mentioned it, and then said that a cracked screen fell into his “cosmetic damage” description.

Make sure that listings answer questions before they are asked. Once someone isn’t sure about something, she may not even ask. She may just hit her back button, return to search results, and buy from someone else. She might ask you the question, and then while waiting for the answer, hit the back button and buy from someone else.

So the best strategy is to not word people to death or feed them an ocean of text. Give people what they need to know to trust you and love your item, without question(s)! Everything else is probably not necessary. For example, I would not have needed a history of Apple or iPods inside the description. I searched for this… I must know what it is, and I didn’t come for a history lesson!
