Doubtful Face

In the film From Dusk ‘til Dawn, Harvey Keitel plays a former preacher who has lost his way. He tries to explain to his daughter just what he’s going through. He says, “I don’t care if you’re a preacher, a priest, a nun, a rabbi or a Buddhist monk. Many, many times during your life you will look at your reflection in a mirror and ask yourself: am I a fool?”

The exact same can be said of an ecommerce seller, or any entrepreneur for that matter. It’s obviously truer when times get tough, but it can happen just as much when things are hunky-dory. Thoughts start racing and you wonder if what you’re doing is going to burst into flames at any time.
Unfortunately for Harvey Keitel, he was chewed on by vampires and then blown up (spoiler alert). However, things are not nearly that bleak for you, no matter how deep the doubt fangs are into your neck.

Start Being Awesome
To begin our battle against doubt, let’s turn to another form of media: the television. Have you ever seen the sitcom “How I Met Your Mother?” On that show, there is a character named Barney, played by Neil Patrick Harris. And Barney is awesome.
I don’t say this as a personal opinion – Barney tells everyone enough as it is. It’s almost become an actual fact. However, there’s one thing Barney does that we can use. Whenever he gets sad, he says, he stops being sad. Instead, he simply starts “being awesome instead.” True story.
What Barney is trying to say (well, probably) is it helps to remember how good you have it once in a while. Try to keep a little perspective. Is your business doing well enough to pay the bills? Then you’re awesome. Did you make a big sale recently? You’re awesome, true story. Finally made your first sale to someone who isn’t your best friend and her mom? Awesome.
Don’t focus so much on the negative. Try to recall what moved you to take the big leap into entrepreneurship in the first place and embrace it. Make it awesome, in fact.

Negatives
Now that I just said don’t focus on the negatives, let’s look at the negatives. Is your store in a crisis and you don’t know what to do? Doubt is rarely so powerful than when it looks like things just aren’t going to work out. That means it’s time for drastic measures.
Every business has ups and downs. I don’t care if it’s Microsoft or Bobby Joe’s Bait and Tattoo Removal down the street. There’s always a time when those at the helm roll their eyes and think, “What was I thinking?”
Now’s the time to really take a good hard look at your business and find out what wasn’t working. Your product might need amending, or your pricing model is all out of whack. Whatever the case, it may be fixable if you really buckle down and give it a shot. Try some new things out and you may be surprised.
And no matter what, don’t stop being awesome!
