Estimated Reading Time: 9 minutes

You know that rush of adrenaline when you step into a thrift store? The smell of old books and laundry detergent, the racks packed so tight you can barely move a hanger, and the feeling that a $200 hidden gem is just waiting for you to find it.

Vintage clothing flipping is absolutely on fire right now. Whether it’s 90s streetwear, 70s boho chic, or 50s workwear, buyers are hungry for pieces with history and character. But here’s the thing: you can’t just buy every old-looking shirt and expect to strike gold. You need to know exactly what to look for so you don’t end up with a closet full of “dated” junk instead of “vintage” treasures.

In this guide, I’m going to walk you through the secret language of vintage clothing. From the “single stitch” obsession to decoding mysterious RN numbers, you’re about to become a pro at spotting high-value items in the wild.

Start with the Tag: The Storyteller of the Garment

The very first thing you should do when you find an interesting piece is flip that collar and look at the tag. The tag is the “ID card” of the garment. It tells you where it was made, what it’s made of, and often, exactly when it was born.

The Font and Logo Test

Modern tags are almost always printed or have very clean, sans-serif fonts (think modern, minimalist letters). Vintage tags, especially from the 50s through the early 80s, often feature serif fonts (the ones with the little “feet” on the letters) or even embroidered, woven logos. If the logo looks “fancy” or uses a script font that looks like a retro diner sign, you’re likely holding something older.

“Made in USA” is a Green Flag

While “Made in USA” doesn’t automatically mean a piece is worth hundreds, it is a massive clue for dating. Up until the late 70s and early 80s, a huge portion of clothing sold in America was actually made here. If you see a tag that says “Made in USA,” it’s a sign the garment likely predates the massive shift to overseas manufacturing in the 90s.

Decoding RN Numbers

Ever see a little “RN” followed by a string of numbers on the back of a care tag? That’s the Registered Identification Number. This is a goldmine for research.

5-digit RN numbers: Usually indicate the item was made between the 1960s and early 1980s.

6-digit RN numbers: Usually indicate the mid-80s to the present.

You can actually look these numbers up on the FTC website to find the manufacturer, which helps if the main brand tag has been cut out!

The “Single Stitch” Obsession

If you hang around the vintage T-shirt community for more than five minutes, you’ll hear the term “single stitch.” To the untrained eye, it looks like nothing. To a vintage pro, it’s the difference between a $10 shirt and a $100 shirt.

What is it?

Look at the hem of the sleeve or the bottom of a T-shirt. On modern shirts, you’ll almost always see two parallel lines of stitching (double stitch). This became the industry standard around 1994 because it’s more durable for mass production.

A “single stitch” shirt has only one line of visible stitching on the hems. This indicates the shirt was likely made before the mid-90s. If you find a single-stitch shirt with a cool graphic, like an old band, a 3D Emblem truck design, or a 1980s cartoon, you’ve likely found a winner.

Why it matters

Collectors crave authenticity. The single stitch is a quick visual “proof” that the shirt is a true vintage piece and not a modern reproduction or a “reprint” from a big-box retailer.

Fabric Clues: Trust Your Hands

In the world of fast fashion today, everything is a blend of polyester, rayon, and “who-knows-what.” Vintage clothing was often made with higher-quality, natural materials that feel different to the touch.

The Weight of Quality

Pick up a modern wool coat, and then pick up one from the 1960s. The vintage one will likely weigh twice as much. Older garments weren’t “thinned out” to save on shipping costs; they were built to last decades.

Wool: Look for the “Woolmark” logo. If you see a tag that says “100% Pure Wool” with the interlocking yarn loop logo, you’re looking at a quality piece.

Silk: Real vintage silk has a specific “crunch” or “scroop” to it when you squeeze it. It feels cool to the touch and has a subtle luster that polyester can’t mimic.

Cotton: Look for “heavyweight” cotton. 90s streetwear brands like Carhartt or early Nautica used thick, rugged cotton that develops a beautiful “patina” (natural fading) over time.

The Union Label: The Ultimate Authenticator

If you find a small, colorful tag tucked into a side seam or under the main brand tag that says “ILGWU” (International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union), stop everything. You’ve hit the vintage jackpot.

The ILGWU label went through several designs over the decades:

Blue and White (1950s-1960s): Usually means the piece is mid-century.

Red, White, and Blue (1970s-1990s): This is the most common one you’ll find. It often features a small “Made in USA” flag.

These labels prove the garment was made in a unionized American factory, which almost always equates to better construction and higher resale value. NOTE: This website has great information about union labels along with a Timeline and photos. Learn more at: Cornell University

Brand History and Hidden Gems

Sometimes the brand isn’t “Nike” or “Levi’s,” but it’s still worth a fortune. This is where brand history research comes in.

There are “dead” brands: companies that no longer exist but have a cult following. Think of names like Gunne Sax (70s prairie dresses that sell for hundreds), Big Mac (vintage workwear), or H Bar C (Western wear).

How to Research on the Fly

When you’re standing in the thrift aisle and find a brand you’ve never heard of that feels expensive, don’t guess. Use your phone!

Check the “Sold” listings on eBay or Poshmark.

Look for specific features like metal zippers (brass zippers are often older than plastic ones).

Check for “V-stitch” construction on the back of old jeans.

Construction Details: The Small Stuff

Finally, look at how the garment is actually put together.

Zippers: Is it a metal Talon, YKK, or Crown zipper? Metal zippers almost always indicate a garment is older than the mid-70s. Plastic zippers are more modern.

Seams: Check the inside seams. Are they “pinking sheared” (look like zig-zags)? This was a common way to finish edges in the 40s and 50s.

Buttons: Are they plastic, or are they mother-of-pearl, wood, or heavy metal? High-quality buttons are a hallmark of high-quality vintage.

Ready to Hit the Racks?

Spotting vintage isn’t just about luck; it’s about training your eyes and your hands. The more you touch high-quality wool and look at 50-year-old tags, the easier it becomes. You’ll start to “see” the vintage items from across the store!

Thrifting for vintage is one of the most rewarding parts of the reselling game. Not only are you saving incredible pieces of history from the landfill, but you’re also building a business that’s unique and profitable.

Estimated Reading Time: 8 minutes

We’ve all been there. You walk into your local Goodwill or Salvation Army, the smell of dust and old memories hitting you at the door, and you think: “Is today the day I find a hidden masterpiece?”

Most people walk out with a $5 coffee mug and a slightly pilled sweater. But for us? For the resellers who know what to look for? That same trip can be the catalyst for a $500 payday.

Turning a casual thrift haul into a massive profit isn’t about luck; it’s about having a trained eye and knowing which “boring” items are actually gold mines in disguise. Today, I’m taking you behind the scenes of a real-life sourcing trip where three specific finds turned a routine morning into a half-grand profit.

Put your game face on: we’re going hunting.

The Strategy: Quality Over Quantity

The biggest mistake new resellers make is “cart-filling.” They see a $3 shirt and think, “I can sell this for $12!” While that’s technically a profit, the time spent photographing, listing, and shipping that shirt usually means you’re working for less than minimum wage.

If you want to hit that $500 mark in a single day, you need to hunt for high-margin “anchors.” These are the items that carry the bulk of your profit so you aren’t stuck processing fifty low-value items. On this specific trip, I focused on three categories: high-end athletic footwear, modern tech accessories, and “holy grail” vintage.

Item #1: The “Ugly” Shoes Everyone Wants (Hoka One One)

I headed straight for the shoe rack. Most people skip past the chunky, orthopedic-looking sneakers, but those are exactly what you should be looking for. Tucked between some worn-out department store flats was a pair of Hoka One One Bondi 8s.

Now, if you don’t know Hoka, they look like colorful moon boots. But to runners and people who stand all day (nurses, teachers, retail workers), they are the gold standard of comfort.

The Find: Hoka Bondi 8 Sneakers.

Condition: Excellent. Very little tread wear, just needed a quick wipe-down with a damp cloth.

Thrift Price: $12.49.

Resale Value: $95.00.

Why it worked: Hoka has massive brand loyalty. People will pay nearly full price for “like new” pairs because the retail price tag is usually $165+. Always check the inner size tag for the model name and “Google Lens” it if you’re unsure.

Item #2: The Stealth Tech Flip (PS5 DualSense Controller)

Next, I hit the electronics “grab bag” section. This is where most thrift stores dump cords, old remotes, and miscellaneous tech. Hidden at the bottom of a bin was a Sony PlayStation 5 DualSense Wireless Controller in Cosmic Red.

At first glance, I assumed it was broken. Why would someone donate a $75 controller? But here’s a pro tip: often, people donate tech simply because they lost the charging cable or upgraded to a different color.

The Find: PS5 DualSense Controller (Cosmic Red).

Condition: Tested at home: works perfectly, just needed a charge.

Thrift Price: $14.99.

Resale Value: $55.00.

Why it worked: Gaming accessories are evergreen. Whether you sell on eBay, Mercari, or even Facebook Marketplace, tech items move fast. If you’re worried about testing, bring a portable power bank to the store to see if devices at least power on!

Item #3: The Vintage Jackpot (90s Charlotte Hornets Starter Jacket)

This was the “anchor” of the day. In the men’s outerwear section, buried under a pile of generic fleeces, I saw that iconic teal and purple color scheme. I pulled it out, and my heart skipped a beat: a 1990s Charlotte Hornets Puffy Starter Jacket in near-mint condition.

Vintage 90s sportswear is currently at an all-time high. Gen Z is obsessed with the “oversized vintage” look, and the Charlotte Hornets logo is arguably the most recognizable aesthetic of that era.

The Find: Vintage 90s Starter Puffy Jacket.

Condition: Mint. No stains, no zipper issues, and the embroidery was crisp.

Thrift Price: $25.00.

Resale Value: $425.00.

Why it worked: Rare vintage isn’t just a piece of clothing; it’s a collectible. When you find a specific “culture” item like this, you aren’t just selling a jacket: you’re selling nostalgia.

The Profit Breakdown: Let’s Do the Math

This is the part that gets people excited. Let’s look at the total investment versus the projected (and realized) return.

Item

Purchase Price

Sold Price

Net Profit (Minus Fees/Ship)

Hoka Sneakers

$12.49

$95.00

~$70.00

PS5 Controller

$14.99

$55.00

~$35.00

90s Starter Jacket

$25.00

$425.00

~$345.00

TOTALS

$52.48

$575.00

$450.00

Wait, that’s $450 profit! I promised you a $500 day. To bridge that last $50, I picked up a few “bread and butter” items like a Lululemon headband ($2 found, $18 sold) and a vintage Pyrex dish ($5 found, $45 sold).

By the time the dust settled, the net profit for a single 2-hour thrift trip was well over the $500 mark.

How You Can Replicate This (Without the Guesswork)

You might be thinking, “Danna, I never find stuff like that!”

The truth? You probably walk past items like this every single week. The difference between a hobbyist and a power seller is the data. You need to know what to look for before you walk through those sliding glass doors.

If you want to stop “guessing” and start “knowing,” you need to be part of a community that tracks these trends in real-time. That’s exactly why I created the AI for Resellers membership.

For just $6 a month, you get access to the tools and insights that help you identify high-value brands (like Hoka) and rare vintage pieces (like that Starter jacket) before the person behind you grabs them. Think of it as your secret weapon for the thrift store aisles.

Join AI for Resellers for $6/month here!

(Heads up: Pricing may increase soon as we add more features, so lock in that $6 rate while you can!)

Pro Tips for Your Next $500 Hunt

Check the “New Arrivals” Racks First: Most stores have rolling racks they bring out from the back. These are prime territory.

Feel the Fabric: Your hands will often find high-quality items before your eyes do. Silk, heavy wool, and technical athletic fabrics have a specific “hand feel” that screams quality.

Look for Collaboration Tags: Brands like Target often collaborate with high-end designers (such as Hunter or Missoni). These often have a much higher resale value than standard store brands.

Check Every Size: In a thrift store, items are rarely in their designated places. I found the men’s Starter jacket in the “Women’s Large” section.

Ready to Level Up?

Thrifting for profit is one of the most rewarding side hustles for women over 50 (and everyone else, too!). It keeps you active, it’s sustainable for the planet, and let’s be honest: nothing beats the rush of turning a $20 bill into a $400 payday.

The items are out there waiting for you. You just need to know how to spot them.

Spread the love! If this breakdown helped you see your local thrift store in a new light, share this post with a friend who needs a little extra cash in their pocket.

Happy hunting!

Estimated Reading Time: 8 minutes. If you’re interested in turning thrift store finds into profit, this thrift store flipping guide will help you get started.

Let’s be real for a second: walking into a thrift store can feel a lot like walking into a chaotic treasure chest. Sometimes you find the crown jewels, and sometimes you just find a lot of dusty VCRs and stained Tupperware. But if you’ve been following my thrifting videos, you know that the “treasure” isn’t always sitting right there on a pedestal with a spotlight on it. Most of the time, it’s hidden under a pile of “meh.”

As an e-commerce expert who has spent years perfecting the art of the flip, I’ve learned that successful thrift store flipping isn’t about luck; it’s about having a trained eye. You need a mental checklist of high-value items that most people walk right past. Whether you are selling on eBay, Poshmark, or your own site, knowing these 15 categories will completely change your sourcing strategies.

Let’s dive into the 15 things you should always look for to maximize your reselling for profit.

1. Designer Labels and “Quiet Luxury”

We all dream of finding a Chanel flap bag for $5.99, but in the real world, you’re more likely to find high-end “quiet luxury” brands. Look for high-quality fabrics like cashmere, silk, and 100% linen. Brands like Eileen Fisher, Lululemon, or even vintage Pendleton can fetch a pretty penny. Always check the inner seams for material tags. If it’s high-quality construction, it’s worth a Google Lens search!

2. High-End Denim (The Bread and Butter)

Jeans are a staple of the thrift store flipping guide. While everyone is looking for Levi’s (which are great!), keep an eye out for “premium” denim like Mother, 7 For All Mankind, or Joe’s Jeans. Used premium jeans often sell for a fraction of their $200+ retail price at thrift stores, but you can flip them for a solid $40-$80 consistently.

3. Sterling Silver and Gold Jewelry

Don’t just glance at the jewelry counter, inspect it. Look for the “925” stamp on silver or “14K/18K” on gold. Sometimes workers miss these markings, and a heavy sterling silver necklace can be sitting there priced as “costume jewelry” for $2.00. Bring a small magnifying loupe with you; it’s a game-changer for finding those tiny hallmarks.

4. Midcentury Modern (MCM) Furniture

If you see furniture with tapered legs and clean lines, stop what you’re doing. Midcentury Modern pieces are white-hot right now. Even a small side table or a “bullet” planter can be worth hundreds. Look for makers like Knoll, Herman Miller, or even unmarked pieces that have that iconic 1950s silhouette. These are great for local pickup sales if you don’t want to deal with shipping.

5. Vintage Lighting and Lamps

Grandma’s old brass lamp might actually be a designer masterpiece. Look for unique shapes, heavy bases, and interesting textures. Even if the wiring looks a bit sketchy, lighting is incredibly easy to fix (or have fixed). A vintage Murano glass lamp or a funky 70s tension pole lamp can be a massive score for your shop.

6. Antique Wool Rugs

Most people see a rug on the floor of a thrift store and think “dirty.” I see “potential.” Genuine hand-knotted wool rugs (like Persian or Turkish styles) are incredibly durable. Even if they need a professional cleaning, a high-quality wool rug that you pick up for $20 could be worth $300 or more to the right collector. Look for the “fringe”, if it’s part of the weave and not sewn on, it’s likely handmade.

7. Solid Wood Small Furniture

Stay away from the particle board! If you find a solid wood drinks table or a sturdy side chair, grab it. These are perfect for “flipping” with a bit of paint or stain, but often they just need a good cleaning with wood oil. Quality wood furniture is becoming harder to find at affordable prices, making these a high-demand item for resellers.

8. The Holy Grail: Vintage Pyrex

If you see a colorful bowl with a pattern (think “Pink Daisy” or “Butterprint”), do not let it go. Vintage Pyrex has a cult-like following. Serious collectors will pay hundreds for rare colors or complete sets. Check for chips or “dishwasher burr” (where the shine has been dulled), but even imperfect pieces sell well because people love to use them!

9. Fire King and Jadeite Kitchenware

Similar to Pyrex, Fire King (especially the milky green “Jadeite”) is a winner. It has a nostalgic, farmhouse feel that buyers go crazy for. Look for mugs, mixing bowls, and refrigerator dishes. If you’re lucky enough to find a stack of Jadeite plates, you’ve just hit the thrifting jackpot.

10. Majolica Pottery

Keep an eye out for colorful, lead-glazed earthy pottery that often features 3D elements like fruit, animals, or leaves. This is Majolica. It has a very distinct, “maximalist” look that is currently trending in home decor. High-quality Majolica pieces from Italy or Spain can command premium prices on platforms like eBay.

11. Murano Glass

Hand-blown glass from Murano, Italy, is known for its vibrant colors and incredible craftsmanship. Look for paperweights, bowls, or “clown” figurines. True Murano glass is often heavy and has a polished “pontil” mark on the bottom. Even if it doesn’t have the original sticker, the quality usually speaks for itself.

12. First Edition Books

The book section is a goldmine if you know what to look for. Check the copyright page for a “1” in the number line. Modern first editions (think Harry Potter or Stephen King) can be valuable, but so can obscure technical books or vintage cookbooks. Don’t forget to check out 5 Great Reasons to Sell Items Online to see why books are such a great entry point.

13. Vintage Toys (80s and 90s Nostalgia)

Millennials are now at the age where they want to buy back their childhood. Look for original Star Wars figures, My Little Pony, Transformers, and early Nintendo or Sega games. Even “junk” bags of toys can contain a rare piece of LEGO or a valuable action figure accessory.

14. Original Signed Artwork

Avoid the mass-produced prints from big-box stores. Instead, look for original oil paintings, watercolors, or limited-edition lithographs that are signed by the artist. Even if you don’t recognize the name, a beautiful, original piece of art in a high-quality frame is always worth a look. You can often sell the frame alone for more than the cost of the entire piece!

15. Heavy-Duty Vintage Tools

They really don’t make them like they used to. Look for American-made brands like Craftsman (vintage), Starrett, or Snap-On. Even if they have a bit of surface rust, these tools were built to last a lifetime. Mechanics and woodworkers are always on the lookout for “old-school” quality.

Scaling Your Reselling Business

What Is a Lobster Sweater, Anyway? The rising trend in lobster sweater resale has piqued interest among fashion enthusiasts.

A lobster sweater is exactly what it sounds like—a cozy knit sweater featuring a lobster design. Most commonly, it’s a red lobster printed or stitched on a navy or cream-colored sweater. Think “preppy meets playful.” The design screams coastal charm and summer vibes, with strong ties to New England fashion.

Originally made famous by high-end brands like J.Crew, L.L. Bean, and Talbots, lobster sweaters have taken on a cult-like following. Some even pop up in collections from Vineyard Vines, Brooks Brothers, and Ralph Lauren. These lobster-loving knits aren’t just cute—they’re iconic, making them popular in the lobster sweater resale market.

Why Are Lobster Sweaters So Popular Right Now?

Lobster sweaters have made waves on Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest. Influencers are pairing them with denim shorts and boat shoes, rocking them at beach houses, lobster bakes, and summer vacations. The nautical aesthetic is nostalgic and trendy at the same time. It’s prep-school-meets-cottage-core, with a splash of coastal grandmother energy. This blend of styles has amplified their demand in lobster sweater resale circles.

And don’t forget the media boost! In 2020, Taylor Swift wore a lobster sweater in one of her music videos and instantly reignited a frenzy. Even now, resale prices spike every summer as vacationers search for that signature seaside style fitting for lobster sweater resale opportunities.

ROSS?

OMGosh, resellers, be sure to check the racks at Ross. According to these TikTok users, they can be found on the racks at Ross!

The Reseller Buzz: Lobster Sweaters at Thrift Stores

Resellers in the know are keeping a sharp eye out for lobster sweaters at local thrift shops, estate sales, and donation bins. These sweaters often fly under the radar—unless you know what you’re looking for.

You might find a vintage J.Crew lobster sweater for $5 and flip it for $60 on eBay or Poshmark. A pristine Talbots version can fetch even more. Add the keywords “nautical,” “preppy,” “lobster print,” and “coastal” to your listings for extra visibility.

Keep an eye on:

J.Crew Lobster Intarsia Sweaters

Talbots Nautical Lobster Crewnecks

Vintage knit lobster cardigans

Children’s lobster-themed sweaters (kidswear sells too!)

Pro Tip for Thrift Hunters:

Always check the tag! Older labels from the ‘90s and early 2000s signal vintage value. Look for quality yarns—cotton blends and wool sell better than synthetic knits. And always snap a clear photo of the lobster design. Buyers love that quirky detail.

Also, list early in the season. Spring and early summer are prime times for lobster sweater sales. By July, vacationers are already snapping them up for beach trips and family photo shoots. Consequently, this boosts the lobster sweater resale market significantly.

What’s the Hot Topic About Lobster Sweaters in 2025?

This year, lobster sweaters are trending as retro-cool vacation wear. With the rise of “quiet luxury” and minimal prep styles, quirky heritage pieces are having their moment. Buyers are looking for statement items that still feel classic—lobster sweaters hit the mark.

In the reseller community, they’re also being tagged as a “BOLO” (Be On the Lookout) item in thrift hauls and reseller YouTube shows. Hashtags like #lobstersweater, #resellerfind, and #nauticalstyle are gaining traction on Instagram and Whatnot.

Where to Sell Lobster Sweaters for Profit

Lobster sweaters perform well on:

eBay (great for vintage and brand-specific searches)

Poshmark (ideal for fashion-savvy buyers)

Etsy (perfect for vintage listings)

Depop (trendy crowd, especially if styled in your photos)

Whatnot (great for themed auctions like “coastal vibes” or “preppy vintage”)

Final Thoughts

Lobster sweaters are more than a quirky closet piece—they’re a hidden gem in the world of reselling. They’re fun, nostalgic, and profitable. So next time you’re thrifting, keep an eye out for those crimson claws. You might just catch a big one!
