The air is changing, the sales are starting, and parents everywhere are feeling the pinch. If youโve stepped into a big-box store lately, youโve seen the price tags. Between the soaring costs of tech and the “must-have” brand names, the back-to-school season is a massive financial hurdle for families.
But for you? Itโs the ultimate reselling goldmine.
As I personally hit the milestone of turning 65, Iโve been reflecting on why I do what I do. This season of life inspired my “Turning 65 Activity Book”: a project born from my desire to keep the mind sharp and the spirit active. That same motivation drives me to help you grow your business. Whether youโre 25 or 65, the goal is the same: building a life of freedom through smart reselling. I share these tips because I want you to see the same success Iโve found over the years.
Right now, parents are desperate to save money, and they are turning to marketplaces like eBay, Poshmark, and Depop to find deals. If you can provide quality items at a fraction of the retail price, you don’t just make a sale: you provide a service.
Here are the five categories where parents are overpaying at retail right now, and how you can capitalize on the demand.
1. The Tech Titan: TI-84 Graphing Calculators
Itโs the item every high school student needs and every parent hates buying. The TI-84 Plus CE continues to retail for anywhere between $120 and $160. Because these are “required” for many math classes, demand is non-negotiable.
The Opportunity:
Used TI-84 calculators are the “blue chips” of the reselling world. Even older monochrome models (the non-color ones) still sell consistently for $30โ$50. The newer color models (CE) can easily fetch $80โ$100 in good used condition.
- Pro Tip: Always test the screen for “dead pixels” and check the battery compartment for corrosion. If you find one at a garage sale for $10 because the parent thinks it’s “broken,” often it just needs a fresh set of AAA batteries or a specific charging cable you can buy in bulk.
- Where to Sell: eBay is king for tech. Use a clean, simple photo of the calculator powered on to prove it works.
2. Status Symbols: Brand-Name Backpacks
A backpack isn’t just a bag; for many students, itโs a status symbol. Brands like The North Face, JanSport, and L.L.Bean are top tier because of their lifetime warranties and durability.
Parents are currently paying $100+ for a new North Face Borealis or Recon. You can often find these at thrift stores for under $15 because they look “dirty.”
The Opportunity:
Don’t be afraid of a little dirt. Most high-end backpacks are machine washable (air dry only!). Once cleaned up, a pre-owned North Face bag in a neutral color like black or navy can flip for $50โ$70 all day long.
- Bundling Strategy: If you find a backpack, look for a matching lunchbox or a sturdy water bottle. Selling them as a “Ready for Class” bundle can bump it up and save the parent on shipping costs.
- Check the Zippers: Always mention in your listing that “all zippers are functional.” Itโs the number one question parents ask.
3. The “Cool” Factor: Stanley and Yeti Gear
The hype around Stanley Quenchers might have softened slightly, but the demand for high-quality insulated drinkware remains high. Parents are tired of buying cheap plastic bottles that break in a month. They are looking for the durability of Stanley and Yeti but don’t want to pay the $45+ retail price for a single cup.
The Opportunity:
While “limited edition” colors can still fetch a premium, the real bread and butter is in the standard, gently used gear.
- Dorm Essentials Pivot: Don’t forget the college crowd. Mini-fridges, storage bins, and Twin XL bedding are huge right now. If you have the space to store them, picking up a mini-fridge at a yard sale for $20 and listing it on Facebook Marketplace for $60 in late August is an easy win.

4. The Teacherโs Closet: Classroom Decor & Supplies
We often focus so much on the students that we forget the teachers! Most teachers spend their own money on classroom decor. They are currently looking for “Dark Academia” or “Y2K Retro” aesthetics to make their rooms stand out.
The Opportunity:
Look for bulk lots of school supplies, organizational bins, or even high-quality storage carts (like the rolling 3-tier carts).
- Teacher Bundles: Create a “New Teacher Starter Kit” with a stapler, tape dispenser, colorful bins, and a set of dry-erase markers. These bundles get noticed because they save the buyer time.
- Marketplace Tip: Use keywords like “classroom organization” and “homeschool essentials” to capture different segments of the market.
5. The Wardrobe Refresh: Nike Dunks & Lululemon
Back-to-school clothes are the biggest expense for many families. Specifically, Nike Dunks, Lululemon leggings, and high-end denim are at the top of every “want” list.
The Opportunity:
Athleisure and “streetwear” maintain incredible resale value. A pair of Nike Dunks that retail for $115 can often be found at “bin” stores or thrift shops for a fraction of that. Even if they have some wear, students actually prefer the “lived-in” look over a stiff new pair sometimes.
- Platform Strategy: For clothing, Depop is where the younger crowd lives. They love the vintage aesthetic. Poshmark is great for Lululemon and mid-to-high-end brands.
- A Note on Flyp: I know many of you use cross-listing tools. Just a reminder that Flyp does not have a mobile app, so make sure you are managing your listings through their desktop site to keep everything synced.
Smart Strategies to Bump It Up
If you want to maximize your margins this season, you have to work smarter, not harder.
- Timing is Everything: Start listing your back-to-school items now. Don’t wait until the week school starts. Parents are planners.
- Use AI to Speed Up Your Workflow: One of the biggest bottlenecks in reselling is writing descriptions and researching prices. Iโve been using Marblism to handle the heavy lifting. Itโs an incredible tool that helps you generate listings and optimize your workflow so you can spend more time sourcing and less time typing. You can check it out using my link here: Marblism for Resellers.
- Spread the Love with Bundles: As mentioned before, bundling is your best friend. A TI-84 calculator bundled with a protective case and a set of pens is far more attractive than just the calculator alone.
