The WhatNot Experience: Fast Sales, High Energy, and Lessons Learned

If youโ€™ve been in the reselling game for a while, you know the landscape is always shifting. First, it was just eBay, then came the rise of Poshmark, and now? Now we are in the era of “Live Selling.” It is fast, it is loud, and it is a total adrenaline rush.

I recently took the plunge into the world of WhatNot, and let me tell you: it was a wild ride.
Iโ€™ve had some incredible wins and some “learning moments” that I want to share with you so you can skip the struggle and go straight to the sales. Whether youโ€™re a seasoned pro or just getting your feet wet, thereโ€™s a place for you here, but you have to know how to play the game.

What Exactly is WhatNot?

Think of WhatNot like a mix between eBay and a late-night infomercial, but way more fun. Itโ€™s a live auction platform where you, the seller, go on camera and auction off your items in real-time. Instead of waiting seven days for an auction to end or weeks for someone to find your “Buy It Now” listing, sales happen in seconds.

The energy is high. People are chatting, bidding, and competing. It creates a sense of urgency that you just don’t get on traditional marketplaces. But because itโ€™s live, it requires a different set of muscles than just taking photos and writing descriptions.

My Experience: The Good, The Bad, and The “Wait, What?”

Iโ€™m always honest with you guys about my business. Not everything I touch turns to gold on the first try! When I started on WhatNot, I experimented with different niches to see what moved.

The Big Wins: Movie Posters and Perfume

I had absolute home runs with vintage movie posters and high-end perfumes. Why? Because these are “collector” items. On WhatNot, people love to hunt for specific, tangible treasures. When I held up a classic movie poster, the chat went wild. People could see the condition in real-time, ask me to zoom in on the edges, and feel the excitement of the “drop.”

Perfume also performed amazingly well. Since I could talk about the scent notes and show the fill level clearly on camera, buyers felt confident bidding. These items moved fast and for great prices because they catered to a specific audience that was already hanging out on the app.

The Flop: Used Clothing

Now, here is the “bad” news. My experience with used clothing on WhatNot was, frankly, terrible. I know some people make a killing in the “bins” style shows, but for me, the effort of prepping, hanging, and showing used clothing didn’t match the payout.

The bidding stayed low, and the competition in the clothing category is fierce. If you aren’t selling high-end designer gear or incredibly trendy Y2K pieces, you might find yourself selling items for $1 or $2 just to move them. Itโ€™s a high-volume, low-margin game in that category, and it wasn’t the right fit for my business model at the time.

Preparing for Your First Show

Ready to give it a go? You can’t just hit “Go Live” and hope for the best. You need a plan. Here is how to prepare so you don’t feel overwhelmed.

  1. Curate Your Inventory: Don’t just grab a random pile of stuff. Pick a theme. If youโ€™re doing “Vintage Media,” stick to that. It helps the algorithm find the right buyers for you.
  2. Set Up Your Space: You donโ€™t need a professional studio, but you do need good lighting. A simple ring light makes a huge difference. Make sure your background isn’t distracting: you want the focus on the product!
  3. Test Your Tech: Check your internet connection. There is nothing worse than a laggy stream when the bidding is getting hot.
  4. Pre-Load Your Listings: You can enter your items into the “store” before you go live. This saves you from typing while youโ€™re trying to talk to your audience.

The Importance of Building an Audience

WhatNot isn’t just a shop; itโ€™s a community. You aren’t just a seller; youโ€™re an entertainer.

When you first start, you might only have two people in your room. Talk to them anyway. Greet them by their username. Ask them what they’re looking for. The more you engage, the longer they stay. The longer they stay, the more the WhatNot algorithm realizes your show is “sticky,” and it will start showing your stream to more people.

Consistency is key. If you show up every Tuesday at 7 PM, your “regulars” will start to look for you. Thatโ€™s how you build a following that shows up to every single auction ready to bid.

Shipping and Logistics (The Easy Part!)

One thing I love about WhatNot is how they handle shipping. They make it incredibly easy to bundle items. If a buyer wins five of your auctions, the system automatically bundles them into one shipping label to save the buyer money.

You just print the labels through the seller dashboard and drop them off. Itโ€™s a streamlined process that takes a lot of the headache out of the “post-sale” phase. Is WhatNot Right For You?

If you enjoy talking to people and have inventory that fits the “collector” or “niche” vibe, WhatNot is a powerhouse. Itโ€™s also great if you have a lot of “stale” inventory that you just want to move quickly to clear out space for new finds.

However, if you are camera-shy or prefer the “list it and forget it” style of eBay or Etsy, the live format might feel a bit draining.

Iโ€™m 65 now, and Iโ€™ve seen every trend come and go. I wrote my “Turning 65 Activity Book” to celebrate this stage of life, and one thing Iโ€™ve learned is that staying curious keeps you sharp! Whether it’s learning a new app like WhatNot or mastering AI to write your descriptions, never stop evolving.

Final Thoughts

WhatNot is a tool in your toolbox. It doesn’t have to be your only platform, but itโ€™s a fantastic way to inject some cash flow and energy into your business. Give it a shot with a small “niche” show first, and see how it feels. You might just find your new favorite way to sell!
