Because the 2016 presidential election is so controversial, it got me wondering if I could discover who might win the election based on eBay selling trends for Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton memorabilia and other related items.
Read on to see if I can found any indication of who might win this year’s presidential election and cast your own vote in the fun poll at the end of this article! Also, I’ll be gathering current statistics as the days go by so be sure to keep checking back or sign up for my newsletter to have the results delivered right to your inbox!
First, the eBay listing statistics can be a data gold mine if you have election related items to sell!
Today, I start by sharing basic research using my favorite tool called: Terapeak.
First, searching only the candidates names (Hillary Clinton / Donald Trump) with a 7 day search on eBay to find the highest dollar value and the highest item sold in the last week.
Ladies First – Hillary Clinton’s highest selling item this week was a baseball signed by her! It was a 2001 World Series baseball that sold for $1899.99 on Oct. 13, 2016 eBay item # 122176055934.
The description read:
There were 4,386 listings on eBay with her name in the title which had an average selling price at $12.65. This breaks down to a 53.81% sell-through rate.
Now, let’s review the same 7 day search with Donald Trump as the keywords. The highest priced item sold on October 11, 2016 for: $2,500.00. eBay Item # 172335041104.
The eBay listing description reads:
Comes with 32 sheets, pictured with various celebrities and events including Michael Jackson, Joan Rivers, Prince Philip, 1993 NY Yankee Celebrity Ball. Photos of his 1993 wedding to Marla Maples are also included. Pretty neat photos, it’s like your taking a step back in time! Most of the photos were taken by Victor Malafronte & Kelly Jordan, which is printed on the individual negatives.
Based on that description this is a bit of an unfair situation because all those other celebrities names were in the description. The seller was pushing the Donald Trump name as the most popular name vs. all the other names. With that said, let’s look at the next item that was mainly about Donald J. Trump.

When listing political items on eBay it’s especially important to include as many of the important keywords as possible such as:
