Estimated Reading Time: 8 minutes

Weโ€™ve all been there. Itโ€™s 11:00 PM, your dining room table is buried under a mountain of bubble wrap, and youโ€™re staring at a pile of unlisted inventory that seems to be multiplying like rabbits. Youโ€™re exhausted, your coffee has gone cold, and youโ€™re wondering: โ€œIs this actually making me money, or did I just buy myself a very stressful, low-paying job?โ€

In a recent episode of The Power Selling Podcast, I sat down with the incredible Julie Shapiro. If you donโ€™t know Julie, sheโ€™s a reselling veteran with over 25 years of experience and the founder of Sourcing School. Sheโ€™s seen the trends come and go, from the early days of eBay to the AI-driven landscape of 2026.

The biggest takeaway from our chat? Hustle is a trap. If you want to survive and thrive in todayโ€™s e-commerce world, you have to stop working harder and start working smarter.

Here are the reselling secrets Julie shared to help you reclaim your time and boost your bottom line.

The “Is It Worth My Time?” Mantra

Julie lives by a simple question: “Is it worth my time?”

As resellers, we are the CEO, the photographer, the copywriter, and the shipping department. Our time is our most precious commodity. Yet, so many sellers get caught up in the “death by a thousand $10 profits.”

Think about it. If you spend 20 minutes sourcing, cleaning, photographing, listing, and eventually packing an item that only nets you a $7 profit, what is your hourly rate? Itโ€™s pennies. Julie emphasizes that every single item you touch should have to “audition” for a spot in your inventory. If the ROI doesn’t justify the labor, leave it on the shelf.

Quality Over Quantity: Why 64 Listings a Day is a Myth

Thereโ€™s a dangerous trend in the reselling community: the idea that you need to list a massive volume of items every single day to stay relevant in the algorithm. Weโ€™ve heard of people aiming for 50 or 60 listings a day.

Julieโ€™s take? That is a direct one-way ticket to Burnout City.

When you focus solely on quantity, quality inevitably slips. Your descriptions get lazy, your photos look rushed, and you end up sourcing “filler” items just to hit a quota. Julie argues that listing five high-quality, high-margin items is infinitely better for your business (and your sanity) than listing 60 low-value trinkets.

Focus on finding items that people are actually searching for, rather than trying to brute-force your way to sales through sheer volume.

The Sourcing Formula: Turning $5 into $50

We talked a lot about the “Sourcing Formula.” In 2026, the cost of living and the cost of doing business are higher than ever. To maintain a healthy business, you need to be looking for those “home run” items.

Julieโ€™s goal for her students is often looking for that sweet spot: The $5 to $50 flip.

When you source an item for $5 and sell it for $50, you have enough “meat on the bone” to cover your platform fees, shipping costs, and: most importantly: your time. If youโ€™re constantly sourcing items for $15 to sell for $25, one return or one shipping mistake will wipe out your entire weekโ€™s profit.

Stop Chasing Saturated Markets

One of the biggest mistakes Julie see is “copycat sourcing.” A popular YouTuber posts a video about selling a specific brand of vintage mug for $80. Suddenly, every reseller in the country is hunting for that mug. Within two weeks, there are 500 listings for that same mug, and the price crashes to $15.

To work smarter, you need to find your own niches. Become a master of one or two categories. Whether itโ€™s high-end electronics, specific vintage textiles, or industrial parts, knowing more than the average seller about a specific niche allows you to spot value where others see junk.

Mastering eBay Product Research (Beyond “Solds”)

Most sellers know how to look at “Sold” listings on eBay. Itโ€™s Reselling 101. But Julie points out that looking at solds only tells half the story.

To really level up, you need to use the eBay Product Research tool (formerly known as Terapeak). This tool, located in your Seller Hub, gives you access to years of data, not just the last 90 days. It shows you:

  • Sell-through rates (How likely is this item to actually sell?).
  • Average shipping costs.
  • Price trends over time.

By looking at the sell-through rate, you can decide if an item is worth your time. An item might “sell” for $100, but if there are 1,000 listed and only 2 sell a month, you’re going to be sitting on that inventory forever.

Navigating the 2026 Shipping Price Hikes

Letโ€™s get real: shipping isn’t getting any cheaper. With the recent 2026 price hikes, shipping can feel like it’s eating your soul (and your bank account).

Julieโ€™s advice is to be proactive. If you aren’t using a calculated shipping strategy, youโ€™re essentially gambling with your profits.

  1. Don’t Guess on Weight: Get a high-quality scale and weigh your items before you list them.
  2. Master the Packaging: Are you using the smallest box possible? Every inch added to a box can trigger “dimensional weight” pricing, which can double your shipping cost.
  3. Pass the Cost on Wisely: While “Free Shipping” was the gold standard for years, many successful sellers are moving back to calculated shipping to protect their margins against fluctuating carrier rates.

Less is More: Why You Only Need 1 or 2 Platforms

Thereโ€™s a lot of pressure to be “everywhere.” Sellers feel like they need to be on eBay, Poshmark, Mercari, Depop, Etsy, and TikTok Shop.

Julie calls this being a “Jack of all trades, master of none.” Every platform has its own rules, its own culture, and its own shipping nuances. When you spread yourself too thin, you make mistakes.

For most resellers, focusing on eBay and Poshmark is the “sweet spot.” eBay gives you the global reach and the best search engine, while Poshmark offers a social, streamlined experience for fashion and home decor. Master these two before you even think about adding a third.

Buy Back Your Time with AI

One of the highlights of our conversation was how the landscape has changed with technology. Back when Julie started 25 years ago, everything was manual. You wrote every word of every description by hand.

In 2026, if youโ€™re still doing everything manually, youโ€™re leaving money on the table. You are essentially paying yourself less than minimum wage to do tasks that a machine can do in seconds.

This is exactly why I created the AI for Resellers membership. For just $6 a month, you get access to the tools and prompts that help you:

  • Write SEO-optimized titles and descriptions in seconds.
  • Analyze market trends without spending hours scrolling.
  • Streamline your workflow so you can spend more time sourcing (the fun part!) and less time typing.
